Wow. What else is there to say about last night’s Super Bowl epic? In one of the best football games I have ever seen, Philadelphia Eagles backup QB, Nick Foles, took it right to Bill Belichick’s New England Patriot’s, spreading his gravy from hash mark to hash mark.
Suitors for the first-time SB champion Eagles’ QB are going to appear from every corner of the league trying to blow a bag on the improbable MVP. But where should he go?
Let’s start with the numbers. Foles signed a 2-year $11 million dollar deal before the start of this season, has an average salary of $5.5 million a year, and only $7 million guaranteed. The Bills, Dolphins, Browns, Cardinals, Broncos, Giants, and Jets are all teams that have QB issues to address. Unlike the NBA, almost any NFL team could win the SB any given year, leading me to think teams with talented rosters like the Giants and Broncos could be good fits for the 29 year-old veteran. Both teams have a dwindling championship window and what free agent addition could be better than a SB winning quarterback only bringing a small cap hit for your team? Should Foles perform next season, either team should throw the franchise tag on him or lock him up on a long-term deal.
Big Dick Nick’s trade value is the highest it will ever be at this very moment. For the Eagles, I’d trade him for nothing less than a first round pick as their financial flexibility is limited with the majority of their star players (Alshon Jeffery, Lane Johnson, Jason Kelce, Zach Ertz, Fletcher Cox, Tim Jernigan, Malcolm Jenkins to name a few… holy shit) locked up until at least the 2020 season. Adding another first-round talent to an already loaded roster could turn this Eagles team into a dynasty of their own in the NFC.
All that being said, the best move for Foles is to stay put in Philly. Getting paid a healthy amount to backup Carson Wentz’s slightly more dangerous playing style isn’t a bad option. It is unlikely anyone comes out offering Foles franchise quarterback type money without seeing him put it together for another full season. So why go anywhere but Philadelphia?
Keep doing your thing Big Dick Nick. Stay put. Let the city of Philadelphia build a statue of you right next to Rocky. But make sure it’s bigger than Michelangelo’s David… if you know what I mean.
