NFL Mock Draft #2 (First Round Only)

Now that the combine has passed, it’s time for mock draft number 2. In the following weeks I’ll release another mock draft with at least 2 rounds. After free agency takes place it’ll be a lot easier to predict who goes where. It is difficult to speculate who will fill holes in the offseason and who waits until the draft. There has already been a lot of trade talk around picks and the draft is still well over a month away. Look for the order of the first round to change significantly between now and April 26.

The first draft here will be assuming no trades are made and done with the order as is right now. The second draft will be a little crazier with potential trades that I think could happen. Teams with a star beside them in the second draft mean that the pick is not their’s as of now and I think they will trade for that pick.

  1. Cleveland Browns: RB Saquon Barkley (Penn State)
  2. New York Giants: G Quenton Nelson (Notre Dame)
  3. Indianapolis Colts: DE Bradley Chubb (NC State)
  4. Cleveland Browns: QB Sam Darnold (USC)
  5. Denver Broncos: QB Josh Allen (Wyoming)
  6. New York Jets: QB Baker Mayfield (OU)
  7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: DB Minkah Fitzpatrick (Alabama)
  8. Chicago Bears: WR Calvin Ridley (Alabama)
  9. San Francisco 49ers: CB Denzel Ward (Ohio State)
  10. Oakland Raiders: LB Roquan Smith (Georgia)
  11. Miami Dolphins: DB Derwin James (Florida State)
  12. Cincinnati Bengals: OT Connor Williams (Texas)
  13. Washington Redskins: DT Vita Vea (Washington)
  14. Green Bay Packers: CB Josh Jackson (Iowa)
  15. Arizona Cardinals: QB Josh Rosen (UCLA)
  16. Baltimore Ravens: WR Courtland Sutton (SMU)
  17. Los Angeles Chargers: DT Da’Ron Payne (Alabama)
  18. Seattle Seahawks: LB Tremaine Edmunds Virginia Tech)
  19. Dallas Cowboys: DT Harrison Phillips (Stanford)
  20. Detroit Lions: DE/OLB Marcus Davenport (UTSA)
  21. Buffalo Bills: C/G James Daniels (Iowa)
  22. Buffalo Bills: WR James Washington (Oklahoma State)
  23. Los Angeles Rams: OLB Harold Landry (Boston College)
  24. Carolina Panthers: WR Anthony Miller (Memphis)
  25. Tennessee Titans: LB Rashaan Evans (Alabama)
  26. Atlanta Falcons: OG Isaiah Wynn (Georgia)
  27. New Orleans Saints: TE Dallas Goedert (South Dakota State)
  28. Pittsburg Steelers: LB Leighton Vander Esch (Boise State)
  29. Jacksonville Jaguars: TE Mark Andrews (Oklahoma)
  30. Minnesota Vikings: OT Kolton Miller (UCLA)
  31. New England Patriots: LB Malik Jefferson (Texas)
  32. Philadelphia Eagles: OG Will Hernandez (UTEP)

Let me start by saying this, I do not think Darnold is the best QB in the draft, or will be the first one taken. For now though, and assuming no trades are made, it looks like he is. The fact that he did not throw at the combine just confirms my suspicion that his arm is sub par compared to the other QB’s in this overhyped draft class. It’s like the media just picked this guy to hype up and make the number 1 pick when he is in no way at all anywhere close to worthy. If you watched college football and have much of a brain you probably have the same opinion. The bowl game against Ohio State was an absolute joke. He gave USC no chance to win and may as well have been playing for the Buckeyes. With how much talent he had around him at southern Cal, how little he excelled amazes me. I honestly don’t think he is even an NFL quarterback right now. He has a lot more developing to do in my opinion. Sure he has great intangibles and seems like Andrew Lock off the field, but no way in hell I’m taking him number 1 because he is a nice guy.

Now that how I feel about Darnold is out of the way, let’s look at the second mock draft that I think is a little more realistic. Keep in mind, the stars by a team means that I have them trading for that pick and it is not their’s as of right now.

  1. *New York Giants: RB Saquon Barkley (Penn State)
  2. *Arizona Cardinals: QB Josh Allen (Wyoming)
  3. Indianapolis Colts: DE Bradley Chubb (NC State)
  4. Cleveland Browns: DB Minkah Fitzpatrick (Alabama)
  5. Denver Broncos: QB Sam Darnold (USC)
  6. New York Jets: QB Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma)
  7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: G Quenton Nelson (Notre Dame)
  8. Chicago Bears: WR Calvin Ridley (Alabama)
  9. San Francisco 49ers: CB Denzel Ward (Ohio State)
  10. Oakland Raiders: LB Roquan Smith (Georgia)
  11. *Seattle Seahawks: DB Derwin James (Florida State)
  12. Cincinnati Bengals: OT Connor Williams (Texas)
  13. Washington Redskins: DT Vita Vea (Washington)
  14. Green Bay Packers: CB Josh Jackson (Iowa)
  15. *Cleveland Browns: QB Josh Rosen (UCLA)
  16. Baltimore Ravens: WR Courtland Sutton (SMU)
  17. Los Angeles Chargers: DT Da’Ron Payne (Alabama)
  18. Seattle Seahawks: DE/OLB Marcus Davenport (UTSA)
  19. Dallas Cowboys: LB Tremaine Edmunds (Virginia Tech)
  20. Detroit Lions: RB Derrius Guice (LSU)
  21. Buffalo Bills: C/G James Daniels (Iowa)
  22. Buffalo Bills: WR james Washington (Oklahoma State)
  23. Los Angeles Rams: OLB Harold Landry (Boston College)
  24. Carolina Panthers: WR Anthony Miller (Memphis)
  25. Tennessee Titans: LB Rashaan Evans (Alabama)
  26. *Cleveland Browns: OT Kolton Miller (UCLA)
  27. *New York Jets: OT Mike McGlinchey (Notre Dame)
  28. Pittsburg Steelers: LB Leighton Vander Esch (Boise State)
  29. Jacksonville Jaguars: TE Mark Andrews (Oklahoma)
  30. Minnesota Vikings: OG Isaiah Wynn (Georgia)
  31. New England Patriots: CB Mike Hughes (UCF)
  32. Philadelphia Eagles: OG Will Hernandez (UTEP)

The trades I have taking place are:

1- The Giants swap picks with Cleveland and throw them an additional pick (probably a second rounder)

2- Cleveland turns around and trades the pick from the Giants to the Cardinals for the number 15 pick and additional picks

3- Seattle trades Richard Sherman and a late round pick to the Dolphins for the 11th pick

4- Cleveland trades 2 early second round picks for Atlanta’s number 26 pick

5- Jets trade a future pick to New Orleans for pick 27

I have a feeling that the top pick will be moved and Cleveland is going to try to drop down a couple spots. They’ll take Barkley if he is still there at 4 (but he won’t be) and then Rosen, or possibly go Minkah Fitzpatrick at 4 and then Rosen and a running back later in the first round or early in the second. They could trade the first pick and have 3 first round picks and take a running back like Derrius Guice, Sony Michel, Nick Chubb, Bryce Love, or Ronald Jones II. If I were running the Browns, I would trade the number one pick for the Giants second overall pick and then also their second round pick and possibly a future pick as well. I would then trade the number 2 pick to the Cardinals for the number 15 pick and their second round pick also and an additional pick or 2. Cleveland would then have picks 4 and 15 in the first round (maybe another at the end of the round) and potentially 4 second round picks where they can load up on offensive weapons and protection for their new QB. I would target a QB in free agency prior to the draft and let Rosen sit for a year or 2 behind them and not ruin his development, then let him take over when he proves he is ready. If they don’t screw up (which they probably will) the Browns could walk out of the first 2 round with potentially Minkah Fitzpatrick, Rosen, Sony Michel, Anthony Miller, and a little bit of line help to protect their new QB.

The Seahawks are liable to move up in the draft or acquire another first round pick. They are looking like the Cavs at the trade deadline right now. They just dealt DE Michael Bennett and CB Richard Sherman appears to be next.

Look for Anthony Miller and Quenton Nelson to both shoot up draft boards in the next month and a half. Somebody could likely to trade up for Nelson and take him in the top 5.

A more extensive mock draft will be posted in a couple weeks, after free agency.
